Flags, flag, flags... Signs… and more!

posted Aug 14, 2009, 7:05 PM by ~ Soup

Hello Nectarines! I’m Soup, the enabler of Nectar Village. The burn is getting very, very close and I can’t wait to see all of you out there!

Now that we are close to the burn, you’ll begin getting emails from me every few days. These emails will contain important information, so please read them!

Today, I am writing you because some of our projects need your help!

--MAILING LIST--

Although we have over 300 campers in Nectar Village this year, we have only 110 people on this list! That means that about 200 people won’t receive these important messages! Please forward this to others in your camps AND tell them to join this list! They can join here:

--THE FLAGS--

I want to ring our village and the keyhole we will have with flags. We need about 40 flags. I’d love for these flags to be designed by you and made by you. So, I’m writing to ask you to make a flag (or two, or more) to bring with you to the playa. It’s simple to do.

Please let me know if you will make one or more at soup@nectervillage.com. Let me know what day you are arriving with the flag too, please.

The flag can have whatever you want on it- abstract design, words, whatever. I want you to express yourself and create something to share with the rest of the village and greater Black Rock community.

There are great instructions at http://www.ehow.com/how_4692608_make-a-flag.html.

I’ve done it a little differently; here is how I did it:

1)      I went to a fabric store and bought 2 yards of ripstop nylon fabric in one color (the base color) and then a bought a yard or less of some other colors, from which I would cut out shapes, letters, designs to later glue/sew onto the larger piece of fabric. If you don’t want to sew, buy some fabric glue at the store, while you are there. I used glue, because I can’t sew.

2)      We are making flags that are 3’x 5’, but we need to created a pocket for the flagpole, so leave 3.5” excess length. We’ll glue the pocket shut and the flag right onto the flagpole, once on the playa. Also, if you want to ensure your flag will last for more than the week, you should leave a 1” excess beyond the dimensions above, on each boarder, and then fold the excess back, and sew or glue, to create a hemmed edge.

3)      Cut out TWO SETS of whatever you are going to decorate the flag with, from the other colors of nylon you bought. You will need to glue one set, onto each side.

4)      Glue or sew the pieces onto the flag.

5)      Let it dry, and then bring it with you!

Once we are out on the playa, I’ll use that extra 3.5” to attach the flag directly to a pole, and then we’ll put it up for everyone to enjoy!

--THE SIGN--

Another thing we are in desperate need of is a sign! We need a large nectar village banner. If you are interested in making one, please let me know! You’d need to be arriving Monday, or send it along with someone that is. I’m thinking this should be a large 8’ type banner, painted on canvas or some other heavy material. I’m pretty flexible on the what and how, so just let me know if you are interested. I will reimburse you for your costs too.

--BURN BARRELS—

We will have burn barrels in the village again this year. As far as I know, none of the ones that were with us last year are returning. We are going to cut two new ones in the Bay Area. However, we need to know if anyone else is planning on bringing – OR CAN BRING – a burn barrel?

Please let me know. We would like to have 3-4 barrels, and I also need to plan for firewood. If you bring a barrel for the village, we provide the wood to burn it.

--EARLY ARRIVAL PASSES—

Early Arrival passes are distributed from Burning Man to me. I then distribute them to the camp leads. I have begun to get some early arrival passes, but I have not been told how many to expect in total. I hope to have that information soon. Once I know how many total passes we have, then I can begin distributing to the camp leads. If we do not get as many passes as we have requested, which is likely, then we will have to ration the passes. This has happened before with little impact. This should all be worked out soon- don’t fret.

Thank you all for reading. Expect more soon.

Please contact me if you can help with any of the projects listed.
